What does Certified Organic mean?

Tell me about being Certified Organic.
Waseda Farms is Certified Organic through MOSA, the largest organic certfier of Livestock and Dairy in the USA and based right here in Wisconsin.
They inspect us annually to ensure that we are doing what we say we are doing.

Ever wondered what The USDA Stands For? It stands for the United States Department of Agriculture which administers the National Organic Program, the rules of being organic. Waseda Farms is 100% Certified Organic through and through.

Organic Terms Explained

* No hormones or antibiotics
* No herbicides, pesticides, fungicides
* No chemical fertilizers
* No GMOs or genetically engineered products
* Humanely treated and sustainable raised animals
* All animals have space to move and roam outdoors
* Certified following annual inspection

To be certified organic and grass-fed, the grass has to come from non-GMO seed and never be sprayed with chemicals or use of synesthetic fertilizers.

Grass-fed beef is better for human health than grain-fed beef in 10 different ways, according to a 2009 study by the USDA and Clemson University. Compared with grain-fed beef, grass-fed beef is:

* Lower in total fat
* Higher in beta-carotene
* Higher in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol)
* Higher in the B-vitamins thiamin and riboflavin

No Sodium Nitrate or MSG, but still ready-to-eat. Celery powder and sea salt achieve the same result in our ready to eat items, such as summer sausage and hot dogs

The National Organic Program was established by the United States Department of Agriculture and is overseen by third-party companies. Waseda Farms is certified by MOSA, a Wisconsin company. We are audited annually. Every step in our farming and food process is certified. See mosaorganic.org and ams.usda.gov/national-organic-program.

There are significant differences between natural-and organic-certified beef cattle. The USDA defines natural beef as beef that is raised without additives and is processed minimally. Hormones and antibiotics are not considered additives under these guidelines, so it is left to the discretion of farmers. Waseda Farms goes beyond the standards of natural to earn the more stringent organic certification.

Organic beef comes from cattle that are fed organic foods (not genetically modified and free from antibiotics, hormones, and pesticides) and must be certified by the USDA. The pasture where the cattle graze must also be certified organic. The standards for organic certification are quite stringent. These farms must be re-certified every year.

When purchasing organic beef, it is important to look at the labeling on the package for the organic information regarding the product. If the organic beef bears the USDA organic label, then the beef it processed according to USDA standards and is at least 95 percent organically produced. Some food labels that appear are “all-natural”, “free-range” or “hormone-free.” These labels are not to be confused with the term organic. Only meat that is grown and processed in conjunction with the USDA organic standards may be labeled organic.

USDA stands for The United States Department Of Agriculture, the government department that governs agriculture in The United States. Waseda Farms is certified organic under the "USDA national organic program" which uses accredited companies to certify and verify organic farms and regularly assess that the farm is producing organic food in accordance with The USDA National Organics Program.

Waseda Farms was the name of our farm before the Lutsey family took ownership of the farm. Waseda was the name given to the land by "The Christian Brothers" who occupied this land for many years before the Lutsey's came to Door County. The Christian brothers were raising cattle and produce on this land in a fully organic manner before the word "organic" was widely used. They were simply organic farmers before organic was a popular term.

The Waseda Farms® herd consists almost entirely of Aberdeen Angus, known more commonly as Black Angus. Black Angus have a great natural marbling which makes for delicious and tender beef. They are the most well know beef breed in the world for good reason. And we have to say, they’re pretty darn handsome. And of course, all our beef is 100% grass fed with no antibiotics or hormones used, ever.
