"Ever have had an Eskimo Pie or any type of ice cream on a stick? Well, you might not know it, but you have Thomas H. Lutsey to thank for that. That’s my grandfather. He created the process and holds a lot of patents around the technology used still today to create ice cream novelties.
And he grew up on a dairy farm near Pulaski. He bottled milk and made ice cream and developed a company that became Gold Bond Ice Cream, which is now Good Humor-Breyers.
His son, Tom, carried the family tradition and established Waseda Farms—an organic farm in Door County. I now help run that farm and our Waseda Farms organization.
While my grandfather did not have an opportunity to go to college, he established the Thomas H. Lutsey-Waseda Farms Scholarship—which is a $10,000 scholarship awarded over four years—to help deserving students make college a reality. He also wanted to help support students who would become the future of advancing our rural communities.
Our family remains committed to farming, and this scholarship is one way that we hope to help Wisconsin agriculture remains strong.
We award Thomas H. Lutsey-Waseda Farms Scholarships each year—to students who are committed to returning to their home to help advance agriculture and rural communities of the future.
Since 1986, this scholarship has impacted over 125 students who have received over $900,000."
